About Us and Upcoming Events

Ikebana International - Ann Arbor (Since 1974)

Ikebana (ē-kĕ-bah-nah)

  • We teach Ikebana, the creative and meditative art of Japanese flower arranging, similar to painting, calligraphy and sculpture.
  • Ikebana uses principles and creative theories to arrange “living flowers” or “making flowers come alive”. Ikebana evokes the whole of nature itself, and people’s relationship with nature.

The Ikebana International Ann Arbor Chapter #183 , in our 47th year.

We meet the third Thursday of each month September - May in room 125 at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

  • At each of our meetings, an instructor will demonstrate how to make an ikebana arrangement and then participants make their own arrangements to take home.
  • Non-Ikebana International members are encouraged to attend our meetings to learn more about ikebana. Pre-registration is required and there is a $20.00 fee for flowers and instructor costs for each meeting. Members of Ikebana International pay a reduced fee of $15.00.
  • If you would like to receive our newsletter or more information about our organization please contact us via the button below or send an email to a2ikebana@gmail.com.  We look forward to welcoming you to our next meeting!
  • At Matthaei, we follow University of Michigan COVID protocols.

April 2022 Chapter Meeting

April Workshop – Ikenobo - Miniature arrangements with spring materials

In this lesson, Ikenobo Sensei Cheryl Linck  will lead us in putting on our creative hats and bring our tiny vases, small bowls, teacups, or small ikebana containers with built in kenzans. You may also want to bring small gravel if needed to raise your kenzan closer to the lip of your container.

The only rule in Ikenobo for miniatures is that the arrangement be no larger than an 8 ½ by 11-inch paper. And, as is true in many schools of Ikebana, best to limit the varieties of materials used. We will have some small kenzans available for sale, and will provide floral material. Feel free to bring additional appropriate floral material (ex. Grape Hyacinth, Forget-Me-Knot, Primrose, Narcissus, Virginia Bluebells).

When: Thursday, April 21, 2022; 1:00 pm

Where: Matthaei Botanical Gardens

Materials:

• Small container | vase

• kenzan, or vase with embedded kenzan

• Hasami (Japanese scissors)

• Watering can; flower bucket

• Bowl for cutting stems

• Newspaper or plastic table covering

• Cloth to clean up area

• Camera

REGISTRATION: Members will receive an Evite through email by April 15th. Non-members who wish to attend should send an email to a2ikebana@gmail.com.

Registration closes on April 18th.  Workshop fee: $15.00 Ikebana Members; $20.00 guests

At Matthaei, we follow University of Michigan COVID protocols. COVID regulations include completing a screening either electronically or at the door and  wearing a mask at all times inside the building.  We strongly encourage all attendees to be fully vaccinated.

March 2022 Chapter Meeting

The Ann Arbor chapter met on St. Patrick’s Day for a March workshop appropriately titled “Focus on Green”.  The word “green” originally had the meaning of “grow”. Green is truly a fundamental element of life bringing pleasure, peace and relaxation.  Leslie, a Sogetsu instructor, led the workshop.
